Burdekin Shire Council has adopted a new Economic Stimulus Policy for Development Incentives at its meeting on Tuesday 25 November 2025.

The policy reflects Council’s commitment to supporting a sustainable and growing economy by encouraging new development within the Burdekin Shire. It aims to make the region more competitive for investment by reducing the cost of infrastructure charges levied on new developments.

Council currently charges infrastructure fees to maintain desired service standards and avoid passing trunk infrastructure costs onto ratepayers. However, Council recognises that development costs must remain regionally competitive to attract investment and foster growth.

This policy establishes a consistent, equitable and transparent process for assessing applications for incentives and reductions in fees and charges associated with development. It also supports the objectives of the Burdekin Shire Council Corporate Plan 2025–2030, which include fostering business growth and innovation, promoting workforce development, attracting investment, diversifying the economy, and increasing housing availability, density and affordability.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the policy is an important step in driving economic growth for the region.

“We want to ensure the Burdekin remains an attractive place for investment and development,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“By reducing infrastructure costs for new projects, we are creating opportunities for business growth, housing development and job creation, which will benefit our entire community.”
