Youth Take a Stand Against Homelessness in the Burdekin
Published on 15 July 2025
The Burdekin Catholic High School (BCHS) and the Burdekin Shire Youth Council are joining forces to raise awareness about rural homelessness with the Stand Up Sleep Out – Youth Against Homelessness event, taking place Friday 8 August 2025.
Held during National Homelessness Week (4–10 August), the event invites young people and community members to sleep out in solidarity with those experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the Burdekin.
Burdekin Shire Youth Mayor Nicole Cervoni said the event is an opportunity for the region to acknowledge the growing reality of housing insecurity in rural communities.
“Homelessness in rural communities is a serious issue that often goes unnoticed,” Nicole said.
“It’s happening right under our noses in the Burdekin. People are living in cars, staying with friends, or camping outside because there simply aren’t enough services or affordable places to live.
“Just because we don’t always see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Rural homelessness is real, and it needs our attention.”
Community members can support the initiative by registering to sleep out, donating non-perishable food items, toiletries or sleeping items, or making a financial contribution.
All funds raised will remain in the Burdekin and be distributed by the Burdekin Community Association to support locals in need.
To register or donate, please contact BCHS on (07) 4783 2366, Burdekin Shire Council’s Community Development Team on (07) 4783 9800 or reach out via Burdekin Shire Youth Council’s Facebook Page.
Every contribution makes a difference.
