Council Welcomes 2026 Australia Day Ambassador Arthur Seekee
Published on 21 January 2026
Burdekin Shire Council is proud to announce Arthur Seekee as the 2026 Australia Day Ambassador, who will join the community for this year’s Australia Day celebrations.
A respected Torres Strait historian, museum operator and community advocate, Arthur brings a wealth of knowledge, cultural insight and lived experience to the Ambassador Program.
Born and raised on Thursday Island, Arthur Seekee now resides on Horn Island, where he and his wife, Vanessa, operate the Torres Strait Heritage Museum. Together, they have dedicated decades to researching, preserving and sharing the significant role that Horn Island played in defending Australia during World War II.
In 2026, Arthur and Vanessa were honoured as Local Hero nominees in the Australian of the Year Awards for their extensive work documenting the history of the war in the Torres Strait and ensuring it receives national recognition.
Their research has been instrumental in highlighting the legacy of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion — Australia’s only Indigenous battalion. Through this work, and ongoing advocacy efforts, hundreds of veterans and their families have since received long‑overdue acknowledgement and government support.
Their commitment has also contributed to the preservation of numerous historic World War II sites on Horn Island.
Thanks to their efforts, memorials honouring the men who served during this period now stand throughout the Torres Strait, ensuring future generations understand and remember this important chapter of Australian history.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said Council is honoured to host an Ambassador whose work exemplifies national pride, cultural stewardship and deep respect for Australian history.
“Arthur Seekee’s dedication to documenting and preserving the wartime history of the Torres Strait is extraordinary,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
“His work has ensured that the contributions of Indigenous servicemen and women are recognised, valued and remembered.
“We are delighted to welcome Arthur to the Burdekin this Australia Day and look forward to the insight, connection and inspiration he will bring to our community celebrations.”
Arthur Seekee will take part in Burdekin Shire Council’s Australia Day Awards Ceremony on Monday 26 January 2026 at the Burdekin Memorial Hall at 4:00pm. Tickets are free but must be secured for catering purposes. Tickets can be purchased online via the Burdekin Theatre website or by phoning 4783 9880.
