Burdekin Shire Council advises that Home Hill Pool will temporarily close from Wednesday 23 September 2026 to Friday 4 December 2026 to allow critical refurbishment works to be completed.

The temporary closure coincides with the planned reopening of the Burdekin Aquatic Centre (Ayr) following construction of its new amenities building, ensuring continued access to aquatic facilities across the Shire.

The refurbishment is supported through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland 2024-27 program, which funds infrastructure, maintenance and capability projects for eligible regional councils. The works will improve safety, amenity and long-term usability at the facility.
  • The Home Hill Pool, originally constructed in the 1960s, has not received a major refurbishment since opening. The temporary closure will allow contractors to safely undertake a comprehensive program of upgrades to improve the facility's safety, functionality and amenity, including:
  • Draining the main and toddler pools to complete repairs to tiles, grout and expansion joints;
  • Replacing handrails and pool entry steps at the main pool;
  • Installing equipotential bonding to metal components in and around the pool;
  • Upgrading the electrical circuit servicing the main pool pump;
  • Replacing floodlight switches;
  • Installing a new compliant fence around the toddler pool, with provision for future expansion of the splash park area;
  • Constructing a new permanent gazebo within the toddler pool precinct;
  • Installing a new barbecue and shelter over the existing picnic setting;
  • Adding two new picnic settings to the grassed area; and
  • Sandblasting and refurbishing pool surrounds, concourse areas and outdoor furniture, including repainting and the application of non-slip surface treatments.

Council understands the temporary closure will cause some inconvenience and thanks pool users, schools, clubs and the broader community for their patience while these important works are completed.

The project will help ensure the Home Hill Pool remains a safe, welcoming and functional community facility for years to come.
