New Interpretive Signage Preserves WWII History at Charlie’s Hill
Published on 07 May 2026
Burdekin Shire Council has completed the installation of new interpretive signage at the heritage‑listed radar station at Charlie’s Hill, supported by funding received under the Queensland Remembers Grants Program.
The project delivers important on‑site interpretation at the former RAAF No. 211 World War II Radar Station, addressing a long‑standing gap where no signage previously existed. The new signage ensures the site’s significant wartime history is accessible, understood and preserved for current and future generations.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the project was an important step in recognising and protecting the Burdekin’s World War II heritage.
“Charlie’s Hill played a significant role in North Queensland’s wartime defence, and this project ensures the history and contribution of the former RAAF No. 211 Radar Station is not lost over time,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
“Through the Queensland Remembers Grants Program, Council has been able to address a long‑standing gap at the site by providing informative, accessible signage that allows locals and visitors alike to better understand the strategic importance of this location during World War II.
“Council is proud to preserve and share this important part of our region’s history for current and future generations.”
The interpretive signage shares the story of the radar station’s strategic role during World War II, the radar technology used, daily life on the hill, and its broader contribution to North Queensland’s wartime defence network.
Six interpretive signs have been installed across the site, including:
- A welcome sign introducing the Charlie’s Hill site and its heritage significance
- A primary sign detailing the history of No. 211 Radar Station, its strategic wartime role, radar technology, daily life on the hill and its ongoing legacy
- An interpretive sign at the Eastern Receiving Igloo
- An interpretive sign at the Eastern Tower and Spotters Post
- An interpretive sign at the Western Transmitting Igloo
- An interpretive sign at the Western Tower and Spotters Post
Burdekin Shire Council encourages residents and visitors to the region to visit Charlie’s Hill to learn more about the site’s important role in Australia’s World War II history.
This project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.
