Pioneer Avenue Restoration Project Complete
Published on 18 May 2026
Burdekin Shire Council is pleased to announce the completion of the Pioneer Avenue Restoration Project in Home Hill, preserving an important piece of the region’s heritage for future generations.
The project has seen the restoration of all memorial plaques along Pioneer Avenue, which recognise the founding families of the district. Originally installed in 1998, with additional plaques added in 2011, the display honours the significant contributions of early residents to the development of the Burdekin community.
As part of the restoration works, each of the plaques has been carefully refurbished to return them to their original condition. The plaques have now been reinstalled in their original locations on new, durable recycled plastic posts, replacing the previous timber supports that had deteriorated over time.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the project reflects Council’s commitment to preserving local history while ensuring the longevity of important community assets.
“Pioneer Avenue holds a special place in the Burdekin’s history, recognising the families who helped shape our region into what it is today. This restoration ensures their stories continue to be honoured for generations to come,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
“By restoring the plaques and installing them on more durable structures, Council has ensured this important heritage feature remains accessible, safe, and visually appealing for residents and visitors alike.”
The project also enhances the presentation of Pioneer Avenue as a point of interest within Home Hill, supporting local tourism and encouraging residents and visitors to engage with the town’s rich history.
Council thanks the community for its support during the restoration works and acknowledges the strong interest in maintaining and celebrating the Burdekin’s heritage.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit Pioneer Avenue to view the restored plaques and reflect on the legacy of the region’s pioneering families.
