Turning on a New Era of Water Security

Burdekin Shire Council has officially opened the South Ayr Water Filtration Plant, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of safe, reliable and high-quality drinking water for the Burdekin community.
The new facility represents a significant investment in essential infrastructure and forms a key component of a broader $54.88 million water security package funded by the Queensland Government.
Designed to improve the reliability and quality of the region's drinking water supply, the facility treats water sourced from the South Ayr borefield through a sophisticated multi-stage process incorporating iron and manganese pre-treatment, dual media filtration, disinfection and solids handling systems.
These advanced treatment processes will significantly improve water quality and address historical discolouration issues previously experienced by customers supplied from the South Ayr network.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the official opening celebrated not only the completion of an important project, but also Council's commitment to investing in critical infrastructure that supports the community's growth and wellbeing.
"Today marks the completion of one of the most significant water infrastructure projects undertaken in our region in recent years," Mayor Dalle Cort said.
"The South Ayr Water Filtration Plant strengthens our water security, improves drinking water quality and ensures our communities continue to have access to safe, reliable water for decades to come.
"Water is one of our most valuable resources, and this facility will play a vital role in delivering safe, treated drinking water to our community for many years to come.
"Projects of this scale require collaboration, expertise and dedication and this demonstrates what can be achieved through strong partnerships and strategic investment in essential infrastructure. I thank the Queensland Government, Council staff, contractors and everyone involved in bringing this important project to life."
Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said the completion of Stage 1 works at the South Ayr Filtration Plant shows the government’s commitment to delivering for regional communities.
"Water security and affordability are key priorities of the Crisafulli Government,” Minister Leahy said.
"We are delighted to support Burdekin Shire Council to deliver this critical water security project and we will continue to invest in water infrastructure across regional Queensland."
The South Ayr Water Filtration Plant builds on previous upgrades to the South Ayr water network, including the construction of a 10 megalitre reservoir, installation of new production bores and supporting infrastructure designed to strengthen supply reliability across the region.
The official opening provided an opportunity for invited guests and stakeholders to view the facility and learn more about the role it plays in supplying high-quality drinking water to households and businesses across the region.
