Burdekin Shire Council is proud to celebrate the success of the Young Digital Mentors Program, an innovative initiative connecting young people with senior community members to strengthen digital skills and social connection across the region.

The Young Digital Mentors Program is a digital literacy initiative where young people teach basic technology skills to senior participants, supporting them to build confidence in using everyday devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Originally initiated by the State Library of Queensland in 2025, the program was proudly piloted by Burdekin Library, making the Burdekin the first location in Queensland to deliver this forward-thinking program.

This year’s program continues to be facilitated by Burdekin Library, with support from the State Library of Queensland and the eSafety Commission, ensuring participants receive trusted and up-to-date digital knowledge.

Training for the young mentors has been delivered in partnership with Creative Bytes, equipping students with the skills and confidence to guide others through digital learning.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the program highlights the strength of community connections in the Burdekin.

“Programs like Young Digital Mentors not only build valuable digital skills, they also bring generations together in a meaningful way,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“It’s fantastic to see our young people stepping up to support others, while also developing confidence, leadership and communication skills of their own.”

Participant Inez Larsen, a senior mentee, said the program has had a lasting impact.

“Participating in the Young Digital Mentors Program has been a rewarding experience. I really appreciated the way Andria shared her knowledge in such a supportive, respectful, and approachable way. As a result of the program, I have come away feeling more confident and using more fully the capabilities of my iPhone. Thank you Burdekin Library staff and young digital mentor, Andria,” Ms Larsen said.

The program celebrates both the enthusiasm and generosity of young mentors, and the curiosity and commitment of senior participants who are embracing new technologies.

Together, participants are helping to build confidence, connection, and a stronger, more digitally inclusive Burdekin community.

Young Digital Mentors involved this year include Thomas Lindley, Alexis Lindley, Andria Reinke, William Wiseman, Addison Bonato and Fletcher Sgroi.

Senior participants include Liz Schmidt, Robert Ritchie, Alvin Thomas, Inez Larsen, Margaret McLucas, Michael Irving, Sheron Gaston and Beverley Matthews.

Council encourages residents to stay connected with Burdekin Library to learn more about upcoming programs and opportunities to build digital skills and strengthen community connections.
