Animal Registrations

Both dogs and cats kept in the Burdekin are to be registered with Council once they are 3 months old.

The registration for a puppy or kitten, under 6 months of age is reduced to cover the cost of the required registration tag.

Older cats and dogs being registered for the first time have a flat fee of $25.

Council’s registration period is 1 August to 31 July.

Registration Renewal Notices are sent out at the beginning of July based on the current information in Council’s database.  Renewals must be paid by 31 July each year.

To ensure your details are up to date please contact Council's Customer Service Centre.

Council offers reduced registration fees for animals that are microchipped and/or desexed as well as for pensioners.  The lowest registration fees apply for animals that are both microchipped and desexed.

Working Dogs

The term working dog is defined under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and applies if the dog is:

  • Usually kept or proposed to be kept on rural land;
  • Is owned by a person who is a primary producer or engaged or employed by a primary producer;
  • is primarily used or being trained or the purpose of droving, protecting, tending or working stock,

If you believe your dog is a working dog, please complete the Working Dog Assessment form below and return it to Council.
