Burdekin Shire Council has been recognised at the 2026 LGMA Awards for Excellence, celebrating the success of its innovative Burdekin Macroalgal Facility.

The facility was acknowledged as a leading example of innovation in local government, demonstrating how regional councils can deliver smarter, more sustainable infrastructure outcomes.

The Burdekin Macroalgal Facility uses naturally occurring macroalgae to remove nutrients from wastewater, significantly reducing nitrogen and phosphorus entering waterways connected to the Great Barrier Reef catchment.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the recognition highlights Council’s commitment to forward-thinking solutions that benefit both the community and the environment.

“This project is a great example of how our Council is embracing innovation to deliver real outcomes for our community,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“By taking a different approach, we’ve been able to improve environmental performance while also delivering long-term value for our ratepayers.”

Delivered in partnership with RegenAqua and Pacific Biotechnologies, the project integrates a macroalgal bioremediation system into Council’s existing wastewater treatment process, providing a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to traditional methods.

The facility operates using sunlight and low-energy processes, eliminating the need for chemical dosing and significantly reducing operational costs and energy demand.

The project has also delivered substantial financial benefits, with construction costs significantly lower than a conventional upgrade, alongside ongoing savings in operation and maintenance.

In addition to improving water quality, the facility produces macroalgal biomass that can be reused in agriculture and industry, supporting circular economy outcomes and regional economic opportunities.

Mayor Dalle Cort said the award reinforces Burdekin Shire’s role as a leader in sustainable regional infrastructure.

“This recognition reflects the strong collaboration between Council, industry and research partners, and demonstrates what can be achieved when we are willing to think differently,” she said.

The LGMA Awards for Excellence recognise outstanding achievement across Queensland local government, highlighting initiatives that deliver innovation, efficiency and improved outcomes for communities.
