Burdekin Writers Invited to Put Pen to Paper
Published on 11 June 2025
Aspiring writers across the Burdekin are encouraged to share their creativity as the Burdekin Library Sweet Days Hot Writes Adult Short Story Competition is officially open.
The competition offers local storytellers the chance to showcase their writing skills, with entries open to adults aged 18 years and over.
Writers are invited to submit original short stories of up to 5,000 words, with entries closing on 25 July 2025.
In an exciting addition to this year’s competition, internationally renowned author Matthew Reilly will lend his expertise for the final judging.
The top five shortlisted entries will be reviewed personally by Matthew, bringing a unique opportunity for local writers to have their work read and assessed by one of the world’s best-selling authors.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort encouraged residents to embrace the opportunity, whether seasoned writers or first-time storytellers.
“This competition continues to grow in popularity and provides a fantastic platform for local writers to share their creativity,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
“Having Matthew Reilly involved adds a wonderful level of excitement, and I would encourage anyone with a story to tell to take part.
“This is a great community initiative that celebrates storytelling, creativity, and the passion for writing that exists in our region.”
A special event will be held at the Burdekin Library on Saturday 23 August 2025, where entrants and members of the public are invited to attend a live Zoom session with Matthew Reilly as he announces the winning entry.
