Burdekin Shire Council is calling on the region’s budding young authors to showcase their creativity by entering the 2025 Sweet Days, Hot Writes Short Story Competition.

Open to children aged 5 to 17 years residing in the Burdekin region, the competition invites participants to develop a short story around the theme "Mystery in the Canefield."

Winners will not only receive a cash prize but also have their work published in an e-book on the Burdekin Library BorrowBox app.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort encouraged all young writers to take up the opportunity to share their talents and celebrate the Burdekin’s unique way of life through storytelling.

"Sweet Days, Hot Writes is a wonderful way to nurture creativity in our young people while shining a light on the rich culture and community spirit of the Burdekin," Mayor Dalle Cort said.

"I encourage all children and teenagers to get involved and share their stories."

Participants must adhere to the maximum word limits for their age group:

  • 5–7 years: up to 200 words
  • 8–11 years: up to 500 words
  • 12–17 years: up to 1,000 words

Entries are now open and close at 5.00pm on Friday 23 May 2025.
