Burdekin residents will have the opportunity to clean up their backyards for free during a special waste disposal weekend on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 May 2025.

Burdekin Shire Council is holding a Free Backyard Waste Weekend to assist residents in the ongoing clean-up and recovery efforts following recent weather events.

This initiative is supported through the jointly funded Australian and Queensland Governments’ Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (Category C – Community Relief Fund).

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the weekend would provide a valuable opportunity for residents to safely dispose of eligible waste materials and support community recovery.

“We know some households are still dealing with the aftermath of recent severe weather, and this initiative is one small way we can help residents continue their clean-up efforts,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“We encourage everyone to take advantage of the weekend and help get our backyards back into shape.”

Only outdoor and yard-related waste from the eligible disaster event will be accepted. No household or indoor items such as furniture, whitegoods, or general household rubbish will be allowed. Accepted items include:

• Green waste (branches, leaves, palm fronds)

• Fencing materials

• Outdoor furniture (not indoor)

• Small outdoor shed debris

• Other storm-related yard waste

• Tyres (limits apply)

Sorted items can be dropped off free of charge at participating waste facilities. Residents are reminded to bring proof of residence within the Burdekin Shire.

This clean-up initiative is proudly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
