Burdekin Shire Council has upgraded the stand-alone speaker system along Queen Street, ensuring it is operational ahead of this weekend’s Burdekin Water Festival.

Historically, the system was installed to broadcast Sweet FM radio programs in the CBD, helping to keep the community informed while also supporting local businesses within the Shire.

Building on that foundation, Council has now incorporated a public address function to broaden the system’s use. This enhancement means the speakers can provide announcements, music, and commentary during major community events, parades, and celebrations along Queen Street.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the upgrade reflects Council’s commitment to ensuring community infrastructure delivers the greatest possible benefit.

“Queen Street is the hub of many community events, and this system now has the flexibility to support both our local businesses and our celebrations,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“By adding a dedicated PA function, we can create a safer, more vibrant atmosphere for the many parades and festivals hosted in our CBD each year.”

Council looks forward to seeing the benefits of the new system first-hand during the weekend celebrations.
