Burdekin Community Invited to Candlelight Vigil
Published on 22 October 2026
Burdekin Shire Council is encouraging residents to come together for a Community Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday, 25 November 2026, to honour the lives lost to domestic and family violence, support survivors and raise awareness of this important issue.
The vigil will be held at the Burdekin Theatre Forecourt, with community members invited to arrive from 5.30pm for proceedings commencing at 6pm.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the vigil was an opportunity for the community to stand together in remembrance, show support for those impacted by domestic and family violence, and reaffirm a shared commitment to building a safer community.
“Domestic and family violence has a devastating impact on individuals, families and our wider community. It is important that we come together to remember those we have lost, support survivors and send a clear message that violence has no place in our community,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
“This vigil is an opportunity for Burdekin residents to stand together in solidarity, show compassion for those affected and reaffirm our commitment to creating a safer future for everyone. I encourage community members to attend and show their support, because ending domestic and family violence is a responsibility we all share.”
Domestic and family violence affects individuals, families and communities, and raising awareness is an important step towards encouraging respectful relationships, supporting those experiencing violence and working towards lasting change.
Community members are encouraged to attend and show their support. A free sausage sizzle will be provided.
The event is supported by Burdekin Shire Council, Queensland Police Service, Burdekin Community Association Inc., Burdekin Neighbourhood Centre and Zonta Club Burdekin Inc.
Residents are encouraged to save the date and join the community in an evening of hope, remembrance and solidarity, as the Burdekin stands together to raise awareness and support efforts to end domestic and family violence.
