Burdekin Shire Council has secured funding through the Queensland Government's Fighting Illegal Dumping Partnership Program to help combat illegal dumping across the region and protect the local environment.

The funding will support Council initiatives aimed at reducing illegal dumping, improving community awareness and encouraging responsible waste disposal practices throughout the Burdekin.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort welcomed the funding announcement, saying it would allow Council to continue the important work already being undertaken by its dedicated Illegal Dumping Officer.

"Importantly, this three-year funding commitment will support the continuation of Council's dedicated Illegal Dumping Officer role, ensuring Council can maintain a strong focus on investigating offences, educating the community and responding quickly to reports of illegal dumping," Mayor Dalle Cort said.

"Illegal dumping is not only unsightly, it can damage our natural environment, create public health risks and result in significant clean-up costs for Council and the community."

"Every illegally dumped trailer load, mattress, appliance or pile of green waste costs the community. These clean-up costs are ultimately borne by ratepayers and divert resources away from other important services."

"Securing funding for the next three years provides certainty for Council and allows us to continue building on the progress already achieved through our illegal dumping prevention and enforcement activities."

Council encourages residents to report incidents of illegal dumping and to use the appropriate waste disposal facilities available throughout the Burdekin.
