Council Discusses Agricultural Waste Management Challenges

Burdekin Shire Council has discussed emerging challenges surrounding the disposal and recycling of agricultural plastics following changes to recycling pathways across the region.

During Council's recent workshop, councillors received an update on agricultural waste management, including issues relating to fertiliser bags, trickle tape and other agricultural plastics.

Councillors were advised that local drumMUSTER collection points are approaching capacity, with collection delays creating additional operational pressures.

The discussion highlighted potential implications for landfill capacity, as well as concerns regarding the risk of illegal dumping if suitable disposal and recycling options are not available.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the issue is of importance to agricultural communities across the region and requires further consideration.

"Council recognises the importance of ensuring agricultural producers have practical and sustainable options for managing agricultural waste," Mayor Dalle Cort said.

"The information presented to Council highlighted a number of challenges currently being experienced across the region, and it is important that these issues are further explored with industry and relevant stakeholders."

Councillors supported ongoing investigation into the issue and agreed that further engagement with industry representatives, government agencies and regional partners is required to better understand the impacts and potential solutions.

Council will raise the matter through regional forums, including the North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NQROC), to advocate for greater collaboration and support in addressing agricultural waste management challenges across North Queensland.

Council will continue to monitor developments and participate in discussions aimed at identifying practical, long-term waste management solutions for the agricultural sector.
