Burdekin Shire Council is calling on residents to help celebrate the people, groups and events that make the Burdekin a great place to live, with nominations now open for the 2027 Australia Day Awards.
The annual awards recognise individuals and organisations who have made an outstanding contribution to the community through exceptional achievement, dedication and service. Nominations are open across 10 award categories:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Lifetime Service Award
- Volunteer of the Year
- Community Event of the Year
- Senior Sportsperson of the Year
- Junior Sportsperson of the Year
- Senior Cultural Award
- Junior Cultural Award
- Environment Award
Nominations must be submitted via the nomination form available on the Burdekin Shire Council website.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the Australia Day Awards were an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the people who help make the Burdekin community stronger.
“Every community has people whose actions make a lasting difference, whether through volunteering, mentoring, community leadership, sporting excellence, cultural achievement or environmental stewardship,” Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said.
“The Australia Day Awards are an opportunity for the community to shine a spotlight on those individuals, groups and events that help shape the Burdekin and enrich the lives of others.
“Often the people most deserving of recognition are the ones who are quietly making a difference behind the scenes, which is why community nominations are so important.
“If someone has inspired you, supported your community or gone above and beyond for others, I encourage you to nominate them for a 2027 Australia Day Award.
Nominations close on Monday 7 December 2026, with winners to be announced at the Australia Day Awards Ceremony at the Burdekin Theatre on Tuesday 26 January 2027.
